What are tooth-colored fillings made of?

Unlike traditional amalgam fillings, which are made of a mixture of silver, mercury and other metals, tooth-colored fillings are made of a composite resin. This is why tooth-colored fillings are also known as composite fillings. The composite resin is a durable blend of plastics and glass particles, capable of withstanding the pressures of chewing and eating just like your natural tooth enamel. Composite fillings also chemically bond to the surrounding structure and enamel of your tooth, providing further support. This means that our dentist can preserve more of your natural tooth without having to remove additional material as with amalgam fillings.

How can I get a tooth-colored filling?

The procedure is simple and can be completed in just one appointment. Our dentist will first choose the shade of composite that best matches your natural tooth color.

After removing the decay, our dentist will use a special curing light to harden the composite resin and bond it to your tooth. The filling will then be shaped and polished so that it remains smooth, stain-resistant and natural-looking.

What are the benefits of tooth-colored fillings?

Compared to amalgam fillings, tooth-colored fillings look completely natural. Your tooth-colored filling will closely match the shade of your surrounding teeth. This makes them perfect for filling cavities - even on your front teeth, where amalgam fillings will compromise your smile.

In addition to filling cavities, composite fillings can also be used to repair chipped, broken or worn teeth. They are also mercury-free. Unlike amalgam fillings, which may release mercury into your mouth as they wear down over time, tooth-colored composite fillings contain no traces of mercury or other potentially toxic metals.
